Instructor: Omar Dabaghi-Pacheco
Dates Available: July 6 - 12, 2008 (Session 1) and July 13 - 20, 2008 (Session 2)
Capoeira is rooted in African cultural art forms. Brought to Brazil through the Colonial slave trade, it shares a close link with break dancing. Combining elements of martial arts, acrobatics, dance and percussive rhythms, the fluidity of this Brazilian art form is both impressive and fun to learn. Capoeira is an interactive martial art, considered a game, in which the two players interact by dodging and countering an opponents attacks.
Flexibility, strength, movement, and music are key components of each class. Although workshops are open to all fitness levels, capoeira is an intensive and challenging workout. All classes begin with a warm up and lots of stretching. At first, basic kicks, defenses, and ground movements, such as cartwheels and leg sweeps are taught and practiced in pairs. These give campers a basic understanding of the grammar of capoeira. As the campers develop their skills, kicks and movements become more controlled and elaborate. Eventually, controlled takedowns and tricks are introduced.
Music is an integral part of capoeira. The end of every class involves instruction in the Afro-Brazilian percussion instruments and song used for capoeira. Campers will partake in a capoeira presentation at the end of the session.
